Diabetes Society of Maldives celebrated World Diabetes Day from 20th October -17th November 2012. As the population of Maldives is divided to 188 different islands a sequential walk was organized in each of the 188 inhabited islands. During an entire month, our walk “Steps for Diabetes” covered all the islands, starting from the Northernmost Atoll , Haa Alif Atoll , to the Southernmost Atoll, Seenu Atoll. In this manner we achieved the participation from each and every island including high profile dignitaries Vice President Mr. Waheed Deen, Minister of Defence and National Security, Minister of Youth and Sports, Commissioner of Police, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Presidents of Atoll and Island councils, Heads of Atoll and regional hospitals and hence, carried the message of uniting for diabetes to all corners of Maldives.

Total no of people walked – 28200

That makes 204450000 minutes walked

84600 kilometers walked

That makes 18400500000 footsteps taken for diabetes

Awareness programmes were sent on National Television (TVM), National Radio (Rajje radio), Dhitv and VTV covering whole country throughout the Walk and building up for the event. Steps for Diabetes updates and schedule was telecasted live on Television Maldives continuously every day on PSB bar. This was the first time in the history of the country that an event has been conducted in all the inhabited island sequentially , therefore creating a major impact on the whole country and making this event the most successful awareness raising campaign ever.
