Diabetes Society of Maldives (DSM) was established on 26th April 2000 and became a member of International Diabetes Federation in 2002, with the aim of creating awareness among the public on diabetes and to emphasize on the importance on prevention of diabetes to help patients lead a normal life with their illness. This year 85 patients were newly registered in the society, which makes up to 1097 registered patients at the DSM Diabetic Clinic. 1092 patients visited the clinic for follow ups. We also act as a center of information on diabetes by educating the community through screening programs, presentation, consultation and health Education. In addition DSM also works to improve diabetes care throughout the country.

Our Objectives

- To generate awareness about diabetes among the general public and patients of the diseases and to emphasis on the importance on prevention.

-To help patients lead a normal life with their illnesses.

-To improve diabetes care throughout the country

-To act as a centre of information on diabetes.


These services are being provided for registered diabetic patients by DSM.

Self-Support Group:

On the 2nd of August 2003, the first time in the Maldives DSM initiated a self-help group for the diabetic patients called “Diabetic Anonymous”.


DSM Clinic:

All services provided by clinic are free


Service provided to patient:

Ø Diabetic Education Classes

Ø Screening for:

• Medical history

• Diabetic complications

Ø Foot screening

Ø Blood investigations

• Body fat%

• Measuring BP

Ø Regular follow ups

Ø Directing exercise and counseling classes

Ø Obtaining screening summary report, if required free consultation by doctors.


Special Projects

Islands, Schools, Resorts and Office Programs: DSM started island/Office and resort programs as part of its ongoing programs to create awareness.  The aim of this program is to educate the population on risk factors, screening and prevention, potential complications and treatment possibilities, diet and exercise through screening, presentations, consultations and distribution of pamphlets. Some of the activities carried out in the islands/Offices and resorts include Diabetes Health Education sessions, Blood Glucose testing, consultations by Doctors and Nurses, BMI calculations and Body fat % calculations with advice on diet and exercise.

School Health Education: As part of DSM’s efforts to generate interest and awareness among the students, awareness programs on Diabetes have been carried out successfully for all the schools in Male’.

NCD Risk Factor Survey (STEPS): Conducted survey in collaboration with Ministry of Health and WHO. This study is a simple cross-sectional survey to access the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors among the population in Male’ the capital island. The target population of the study is individuals between ages of 25 to 64 in Male’. The clinical part was conducted by DSM.

Printing of information about CVDs on local newspapers: Printing information were printed about CVDs on local newspapers once a week for one year starting from 14th November 2004 to 14th November 2005.

Global Walk to Celebrate World Diabetes Day: An event to mark World Diabetes Day was held on 14th November 2007 as a Global Walk. The event at Male’ started from Ekuveni Dhandu at 5.00pm and ended at artificial beach. An aerobics routine was performed by fitness instructors from Heat Health and Fitness Club to close the walk. Around 20,000 people participated in these activities around the country from 200 Islands.


FORMATION OF HUMAN BLUE CIRCLE AROUND AN ISLAND: The formation of human blue circle is a simple activity with a great visual impact that can be organized as an individual activity or as part of a bigger event. In this regard Diabetes Society of Maldives held an event to mark World Diabetes Day in which a human blue circle was formed around Kundabados Island using blue umbrellas with Unite for Diabetes Logo. More than 800 people participated from different organizations (Maldives Police Services, Maldives National Defense Force, Maldives Customs Services, Maldives Girl Guide Association, Maldives Tourism Promotion Board, Total Fitness Group, Glow Fit, Runners Maldives and Bandos Island Resort). Over 800 people from the capital island Male’ travelled to Kudabandos Island to join the human blue circle. The human blue circle was formed around the whole island with some people standing on the white sandy beach, some in the clear blue sea and some on the coral reef which signifies that everybody was united for this cause. Subsequently exercise sessions from Runners Maldives and TFG& Glow Fit were carried out. An aerial photo flight was arranged and to cover the event through photography and videography. The aim of raising awareness about diabetes and its complications were the main objectives of this mega event. Awareness programs were sent on local media channels (MNBC One, VTV, Dhi TV, and Raajje Fm) from 30th Sep to 6th November with final reports covering the event. The event was a huge success making history and uniting whole country for diabetes.


Save a Diabetic Child (Ongoing project)

Our goal is to provide support every child in need. This sponsorship will enable the children to receive the medical care and diabetes education they need to stay alive. Support will be provided to type 1 diabetics to purchase insulin and syringes, and provide monitoring and education. This year 35 kids are being supported under the project (approximately 1246140/MRF was spent/yr)


National Award

11th November 2009

The “National Award” for outstanding services in promoting health awareness in the country. Award was given by the president of Maldives in the ceremony to mark Republic day. The award was chosen out of 300 applicants.

DSM Training Institute

This institute is registered as a mobile training institute under the Ministry of Education to conduct various training programs on diabetes. Diabetes educator course conduct by Diabetes Society of Maldives has been approved as an accredited course in certificate level


Project 200 islands (Ongoing project)

The project is designed to promote quality diabetes education and to assist diabetes educators in a variety of settings to promote evidence based education. Project will train a diabetes educator for every island of the country. This project will include 6 workshops within a period of 3 years. These workshops will include 2 weeks theory classes and 1 week clinical at the capital island Male’. The objectives of the workshop are to train diabetes educators from 0 to 200 within a period of 3 years.

The first Diabetes Educator Course under project 200 islands project was conducted at H.Dh Kulhudhuffushi of the upper north province from 14th – 24thNovember 2009.

34 participants from 34 islands from H.Dh, Shaviyani and Ha Atoll participated in the workshop. The inauguration of project 200 islands was held on 14thNovember in conjunction with World Diabetes Day at H.dh.Kulhudhuffushi.

The facilitators were from DSM and Diabetes India. 33 students successfully completed the course attaining pass marks in the written and practical exams of the course.

The 2nd Diabetes Educator Course under the project 200 Islands was conducted at Bandos Island Resort and Spa from 28th March – 11 April 2010.

28 participants from 27 islands participated in the course.  The facilitators were from Diabetes Society of Maldives and Diabetes India. 28 Students successfully completed the course attaining pass marks in the written and practical exams of the course

The 3rd Diabetes Educator Course under the project 200 Islands was conducted at Dhaal Kudahuvadhoo from 2nd December – 16th December 2010.

22 participants from 20 islands participated in the course.  The facilitators were from Diabetes Society of Maldives and Diabetes India. 28 Students successfully completed the course attaining pass marks in the written and practical exams of the course

The 4th Diabetes Educator Course under the project 200 Islands was conducted at Laamu Fonadhoo from 28th May – 11th June 2011.

21 participants from 21 islands participated in the course.  The facilitators were from Diabetes Society of Maldives and Diabetes India. 21 Students successfully completed the course attaining pass marks in the written and practical exams of the course

The 5th Diabetes Educator Course under the project 200 Islands was conducted at Baa Eydafushi from 17th Dec – 30th Dec 2011.

35 participants from 35 islands participated in the course.  The facilitators were from Diabetes Society of Maldives and   Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre. 35 Students successfully completed the course attaining pass marks in the written and practical exams of the course.

WALK WITH FRIENDS

WALKATHON TO CELEBRATE WORLD DIABETES DAY 2011

Diabetes Society of Maldives celebrated World Diabetes Day on 26th November 2011. As the population of Maldives is divided to 200 different islands a walk was organized in each of the 190 islands on World Diabetes Day

Walkathon to celebrate world diabetes day successfully completed, in Male’ the capital city with walks  starting from 6am to 6pm, 12 walks more than 20 organizations, 1500 participants in Male’.  180 walk in 180 islands of the country with over 20,500 people participating and covering over 55,000 kilometers.

Awareness programs were sent on National Television (MNBC one), National Radio (Rajje radio), Dhitv and VTV covering whole country throughout the whole week and building up for the event. Closing ceremony of Walkathon and flash mob was aired live on national television. A supplement was published in newspaper and local TV. The event was a huge success making history and uniting whole country for diabetes
